BACKGROUND

English literature (literature in English language) has evolved to transcend national and geographical borders of Anglo-Saxon nations. Currently considered by many as global lingua franca and international language, the term English has evolved into Englishes. The concept of the term English literature no longer refers exclusively to literary works written by a group of people or a particular nation. Today, literary works in English language could be found in a wide geographical areas and written by writers from various nations.

Besides, English literary studies has also evolved into cultural studies and cultural studies which was British coinage and British in orientation has developed to transcend the borders of Britain, too. Now, cultural studies could be found in universities around the world. Besides, cultural studies of which the first project was pop culture has developed for decades to incorporate various fields and cultural theories. Poststructuralism, New Marxism theories, Frankfurt critical theories, feminism, and postcolonialism have become the theories and fields in cultural studies, while eventually English literary studies also takes incursion into cultural studies.

English literary studies and cultural studies have continuously evolved due to rapid development of information technology. The emerging digital technology and the new media which are transnational and transmedium in their character have brought about new kinds of literature, like cyber literature and fan fiction. This phenomenon consequently does not only expand areas and interest of studies in literature and culture, but also requires new theories and approaches, both multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary, in the conception and construction of literature and culture.

Various forms of literary and cultural expressions, old and new, such as world/comparative-literature, post-colonial, cyber, diasporic and digital literature, to name just a few, open new areas of inquiries in the representations of plurality, marginality, gender, identity and difference. The prolific creative industry also significantly brings forth new artistic expressions through translation, art fusion (i.e. literature and art, literature and music, literature and film), and transmedia (i.e. from novel to game, from film to game, etc.).

In this context, the conference offers the theme of new trends in English literary studies and cultural studies, accommodates new ideas and research findings, variety, differences as well as uniformity of these transnational and transmedia cultural and artistic expressions. Ideas on multidisciplinary approaches and methods for exploring contemporary new media and transnational literature, art and culture will shed light on the various challenges faced by literature and culture at local, national, and global levels.
